Why are cities so important for sustainable development and gearing the world towards a more sustainable future? The simple answer is, cities are the growth drivers of our future. Half of the world’s population already lives in cities, and the number of city dwellers is rapidly growing. But cities and metropolitan areas also account for the biggest share of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and environmental impact. Consequently, cities are where we can make a difference.
The Crystal, a sustainable cities initiative by Siemens, on its website puts it as follows: “Many people move to cities in pursuit of work, adventure and a better quality of life. But in order to protect cities for future generations, we need to balance their overall environmental impact and make better use of finite resources.”
The good news is that many of the cutting-edge technologies required for this vision of the future are already available. But it’s not just down to technology. Every individual can make a contribution through the choices we make every day. As visiting tourists and travellers, the choice is, for example, to support responsible, sustainable tourism by staying at hotels or undertaking activities with tour operators dedicated to environmental and social best practice.
