City travellers, here’s a new interview with one of world’s best travel bloggers. Throughout the year, selected travel experts will share their favourite city destination and travel experiences, offering plenty of inspiration for your next city trip!
Meet Justin Carmack, editor of hugely successful travel blog True Nomads. Justin started traveling over four years ago on a tiny budget, finding jobs at hostels and bars whereever he went, making his travels as cheap as possible. About two years ago, Justin started a travel blog to show people that even without a fortune, they could live their travel dreams. The blog now fully pays his own travels.
Justin, your best city trip so far?
That’s so hard to answer! Every trip is different and almost always good. I loved Ljubljana and Bucharest and Cape Town and Cusco and and and and. It never ends. It’s like asking about a favorite movie. There’s just too many.
Your tips for city travellers?
Well it depends on where you go. I think Europe has the most variety though. Gothic architecture, gigantic churches, epic street art and graffiti. In fact I try to do graffiti tours in any major city. I think each theme is different depending on politics and stuff and really shows the culture. For instance, compare the graffiti in Palestine, Lisbon and Santiago. All so different but talented.
As a professional travel blogger, what makes a city worth visiting?
Well many things. Sometimes people go with one must-see on their list for the city, and it turns out to be the least interesting aspect! Obviously, often it’s the people you meet that make a trip special, but so do awesome old towns and natural wonders, and historical sites. Most good cities have something unique as well.
Your five ingredients for the perfect city trip?
Great people. Unique attractions (Gaudi in Barcelona, the cathedral in Cologne…). Natural wonders and UNESCO sites (Table Mountain, Victoria falls). Old Towns (epic architecture like in old town Tallinn). Warm weather!
Which gadgets/apps are essential companions for a modern city traveller?
Ooooh I got a bunch. Hostelworld. Tripadvisor. Skyscanner. Snapseed to edit photos. Instagram. Rome2Rio. Skype. Google maps. A flashlight app. Alarm. There’s so many.
Would you describe yourself as a responsible traveller? Why?
Yes. I don’t litter. I try to always use local owned restaurants and businesses, instead of big chains. I don’t harm nature. Things like that.
Your key insight from traveling the world?
The thing I’ve learned about travel is that people are almost always wrong about a place. Get your own opinion.
