Copenhagen eco-friendly hotels, tours, eateries

Looking for eco-friendly hotels, tours and urban adventures in Copenhagen? Here are some of our favorite places to stay and experiences when visiting the Danish Capital.

Copenhagen and sustainability

Environmentally friendly hotels, bicycles, rickshaws and battery-driven buses for transportation – not to mention organic restaurants and shops: There are plenty of ways for environmentally conscious travellers to visit and explore Copenhagen. In fact, the ambitious city has set itself the goal to become world’s first CO2 neutral capital by 2025. In 2013, the City of Copenhagen also won the world’s biggest design award; an INDEX: Award for the city’s Climate Adaption Plan.

Copenhagen, which was also the European Green Capital 2014, is the first city in the world to adopt a planet-cooling mandatory green roof policy, and was appointed to be the World’s first Bike City from 2008-2011 by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

Eco-friendly Copenhagen hotels

There certainly is no shortage of sustainability-minded hotels and accommodation providers in Copenhagen. More than half of the hotels in the capital have an environmental plan regarding water, laundry, house cleaning, waste, energy consumption, food, smoking, indoor climate, and administration. In 2013 an impressive 71% of all hotel rooms in Copenhagen were eco-certified.

Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers

“Hotel Scandic Webers is a unique city hotel, where classic 1880s architecture goes hand in hand with modern, trendy design. The hotel’s central location in Copenhagen affords great opportunities for shopping and entertainment. Copenhagen’s most famous tourist attractions such as Tivoli, Stroget (the pedestrian area) and the Round Tower are all within walking distance. The Scandic hotel group began what is now considered the industry’s leading sustainability program, back in 1993. Our goal is to be completely carbon dioxide neutral by 2025.”

WakeUp Copenhagen Budget Hotels

“Wakeup Copenhagen on Carsten Niebuhrs Gade is ‘Green Key’ certified. ‘Green Key’ is the guest’s guarantee of having chosen a hotel which has a policy of looking after the environment. All of the hotel’s toilets have dual flush and water-saving showers. Rainwater is collected from the roofs and used to water the plants, and the large roof surface on floor nine has a green sedum coating, which grows over the roof like a ‘carpet of moss’. Sedum absorbs rainwater, so it does not run into the sewer. It insulates the building and is CO2 friendly.”

Tours and activities

One of the great things of Copenhagen is that you can easily explore the city by food or cycling. Below some of the highlights which we particularly enjoyed.

Tip: Buy a Copenhagen Card for public transport and free access to museums.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

A short (ca. 30 minutes) train ride north of central Copenhagen, this museum is a real gem and has become famous internationally for its modern art exhibitions. It is also a nice place for a picnic or for traditional dinner (the museum is open until 10pm). More info here.

Hey Captain Boat Tour

Hey Captain is the ultimate canal boat tour if you want to explore the city by water.

Founded by Casper and Joel, two friends who sailed around in their own boat Diana. The original feeling was based on being personal, social and informative, which remain the anchor point for the boat tours we do at Hey Captain.

Expect to experience a homelike atmosphere where you can sit back and relax as the skipper takes you through their favorite parts of Copenhagen. In a relaxed pace you will get a sense of the city more than an overload of historical figures.

Tours last one, two or five hours.
