Marina Bay Sands review

Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is probably one of the best known hotels in the world, distinguishable by its iconic three pillars, visible from way beyond Singapore’s borders. Less known is the green profile of this architectural landmark and integrated resort.

Chances are, if you are visiting Singapore, Marina Bay Sands will be on your list of things to do. Particularly at night, the view of the Singapore skyline from the waterfront is priceless, only topped by the Light and Water show, which you can watch for free every night at 8pm and 9.30pm. Wandering through the buildings that make up Marina Bay Sands (most of it underground, the three hotel towers are really just the tip of the iceberg) is like exploring an entirely new city.

Hardly any design and fashion brand not represented in the large and airy, 3-story shopping mall. A function center which can host a dozen weddings a day, in addition to exhibitions, conventions and meetings. The ArtScience museum. Restaurants. World’s largest casino. And, very convenient considering Singapore’s hot and humid weather, a metro station.

Sustainability at Marina Bay Sands

Most of us probably wouldn’t expect shopping malls, casinos, or hotels of the size and scale of Marina Bay Sands to care about sustainability, and even less expect them to be leaders in environmental best practice. And, unless you really searched for it, you’d hardly notice. Fact is, Marina Bay Sands – which belongs to the mighty Las Vegas Sands Corporation – has been very actively pushing the sustainability agenda, with some impressive results.

The entire operations at Marina Bay Sands have been certified according to EarthCheck silver standard for the many sustainability practices. The iconic integrated resort in Singapore is a champion in minimizing resource consumption, including water use and waste production. And that’s quite something, taking into account its massive scale. Marina Bay Sands facilities include a 2561-room hotel, 120,000 square metre convention centre, 74,000 square metres of retail space, a museum, two large theatres and over 60 restaurants and dining establishments.

Marina Bay Sands is also the first MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions) facility in South East Asia to obtain the ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management System certification in February 2014. It is also the single largest building in Singapore to be conferred the Green Mark Gold Award by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in 2012.

On top of that:

  • Rainwater is collected on the roof of the ArtScience Museum in a rain harvesting system and cascades into a pool below. The water collected is recycled in the building’s flush water toilet systems.
  • A drip irrigation system is also used to water plants and shrubs, thereby avoiding wasteful spraying or evaporation.
  • In 2013 over 5000 Marina Bay Sands team members participated in sustainability engagement events.

All in all, quite an impressive achievement and one more reason to visit and stay at Marina Bay Sands.
