We’ve also included some links to healthy eateries and vegetarian restaurants, the weather in Singapore and other useful travel information.

Singapore and sustainability

Singapore has seen a huge change in the last decades, emerging from third-world to a strong, self-conscious first world country. With little land and few natural resources of its own, Singapore has been quite successful integrating environmental needs with urban growth and development.

Trees have been planted along most roads. Recycled sewage, rainwater catchments and desalinated sea water all form part of Singapore’s drinking water supply. Electric cars are a common sight, helped by generous subsidies “to do the right thing”. There is a “Clean and Green Singapore” campaign that has been going on for over two decades, with regular events, activities and community projects all over the country all the time. This social marketing campaign and high fines for littering make Singapore surely one of the cleanest cities in the whole of Asia.

Singapore tours and urban adventures

Gardens by the Bay

“Gardens by the Bay brings to life NParks’ vision of creating a City in a Garden. The Gardens captures the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical Garden City with the perfect environment in which to live and work. Underlying the concept of Gardens by the Bay are the principles of environmental sustainability. Much effort was made to plan and design for sustainable cycles in energy and water throughout Bay South Garden.”

Southern Islands of Singapore

Singapore has a chain of southern islands, which provide an escape from the bustling city and are proof of surviving biodiversity in Singapore waters. The islands offer diving spots of different visibility and wildlife, some have beautiful intertidal zones to spot marine life during low tide.

Some local conservation community groups provide guided walks to these islands. Kusu island has temples where residents can visit at certain times of the year to pay homage to the different Gods. Islands open to the public include St. John’s, Lazarus, Pulau Hantu, Kusu, and Sister’s island – the latter about to become Singapore’s first marine protection area.

Kayakasia

“Kayakasia is to experience Southeast Asia as it is – the people, the culture, the vast archipelagos, thousands flowing rivers – with a kayak. Paddling is wonderful. With your own power, curiosity, humor, without strictures of time and place – all these and borrowing from our planet less than three inches of water at any one place. It is our belief that with each new paddler, southeast Asia and its waterways will be appreciated more.”
