About Vienna

In 2017, Mercer voted Vienna the world’s most livable city for the eighth year in a row. More than half of the metropolitan area is made up of green spaces. 280 imperial parks and gardens enrich the cityscape. In spring, 400 species of rose bloom in the Volksgarten alone. The nearby recreation areas of Prater, Vienna Woods (Wiener Wald) and Lobau invite visitors to go on walks, day trips, hikes and bicycle tours. Plus, a good public transportation network which makes it easy to explore the city (tip: get the Vienna City Card for your stay – it includes many things and public transport is free).

Eco-friendly hotels in Vienna

The following properties have been recommended to us by the city’s tourism office as a good fit for environmentally conscious, discerning travellers:

Hotel Stadthalle ViennaBoutique Hotel Stadthalle

“Green tourism and sustainability are priorities for Boutique Hotel Stadthalle, which is world’s first city hotel with a zero energy-balance. Relax in a unique atmosphere, unprecedented for a city hotel in cosmopolitan Vienna. Tucked away on a quiet street, away from the bustle of the capital city, lavender blooms on the roof and birds chirp in the garden. We are conveniently located within five walking minutes to puplic transport and Westbahnhof train station, while all the culture and attractions you would expect from a stay in Vienna await you just around the corner.”

Tours, activities & urban adventures

Tiergarten Schoenbrunn, ViennaTiergarten Schönbrunn

The oldest zoo in the world and Europe’s best: Tiergarten Schönbrunn is a pleasantly arranged area with many animals, including panda bears, polar bears and with a brand new building for the giraffes. Management puts a lot of focus on sustainability and the zoo is actively participating in conservation programmes, working with many partners worldwide. On a fine day, combine a few hours here with a stroll through the vast park of nearby Schönbrunn Castle. Both easy to reach via tram from downtown Vienna.

Museums

Vienna is no doubt one of the cultural capitals of the world. So much to do and see. The Albertina museum is a real gem – great for learning about how artists have changed their approaches and styles over the centuries. From Monet to Picasso – Albertina takes you on a journey and tells the stories of some of the most impressive and admired artists in history.

Parks!

Parks and gardens, farmer’s fields and meadows, a biosphere park and a national park: Vienna is a seriously green city. Strict environmental protection policy and innovative organic farming methods help to make sure that the city loses nothing of its legendary quality of life.

With more than 50 percent of the city accounted for by green spaces, Vienna is one of the world’s greenest big cities. The city limits are defined by a green belt of woodland, meadows, gardens and arable land. But the heart of the city is awash with pockets of green, such as the elegant parks on the Ringstrasse boulevard, the Prater park and the Baroque formal gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, and the Belvedere.

Healthy eateries and vegetarian restaurants

Exploring a city on an empty stomach isn’t much fun and Vienna has a great variety of healthy, vegetarian or even vegan restaurants for hungry travelers. The list is endless and changes constantly. One we had a chance to try is Eis Greissler – makers of delicious organic ice cream with spots across the city.
