Frankfurt and sustainability

The introduction of a low emission zone in Frankfurt am Main and lorry bans to combat fine particulate matter in the inner city, in addition to the promotion of cycling as a mode of transport, all constitute measures undertaken to enhance the air quality in Frankfurt, and thus make a sustainable contribution to enhancing the quality of life in the city.

Whilst ecological aspects were already taken into consideration during the planning of some of the bank towers, others were retrofitted. The Commerzbank tower is ventilated as much as possible by a natural system, for instance, with gardens located at heights of up to 144m. Combined heat and power (CHP) plants in areas of new development, school buildings to passive house standards, and the use of biogas in composting facilities are just a few outcomes of implementation of the environmental policy guidelines developed by the city.

Eco-friendly hotels in Frankfurt

Surprisingly for a German large city, there don’t seem to be many particularly eco-friendly, sustainable hotels or hostels in Frankfurt. Most hotels with a green policy in place form part of larger hotel chains. Listed here are those hotels with a green policy clearly communicated on their website.

The Palmengarten was founded in 1868 by a group of dedicated Frankfurt citizens. Today, these widely acclaimed botanical gardens are under the care and maintenance of the City of Frankfurt.
