Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers Sustainable Business Hotel

Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers: few hotels take sustainability as seriously as this modern, upscale business accommodation in the outskirts of Copenhagen, the Danish capital: A masterpiece of energy efficiency, commonly known as the most sustainable hotel in Denmark, if not among the very top worldwide.

Conveniently located close to the airport, yet only a short walking distance from the metro station with connections to popular Nyhavn district, Tivoli and all the other must-see sights in the heart of the city in less than 10 minutes, Crowne Plaza would probably be the first choice for business travellers even without its green, sustainability credentials.

The purpose-built Crowne Plaza building has become a Mecca for those professionally interested in sustainable architecture and environmentally friendly/energy efficient hotel design. Sustainability and environmental performance are continuously monitored, challenged and improved, tells us Crowne Plaza Towers’ dedicated sustainability and CSR manager, as we sit down for a chat and refreshment drink in the hotel’s spacious lobby bar.

Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers: world’s greenest hotel

To be honest, at first sight there is nothing particularly green about the hotel. No hanging gardens or water walls. Rather, new arrivals (a free shuttle bus picks you up from the airport, which is only 10 minutes drive away) find themselves in a lobby with a modern, professional, friendly, distinctly Nordic (no-fuzz) business ambience.

Healthy-looking fresh apples aside, nothing indicates the hotel’s extra efforts regarding environmental consciousness or sustainability.

Unlike the Alto in Melbourne, there are no flat screen panels at the entrance indicating the current electricity and water consumption/savings, or how the hotel’s greenhouse gas emissions are offset by various renewable energy initiatives.

It is only later, on our way to the elevators, crossing the spacious, light-filled reception and lobby area, that we notice a couple of large information panels attached to the concrete walls which tell the hotel’s sustainability story. Later we learn from Mireille that these form part of the “Walk of Sustainability” currently under development due to some ongoing hotel expansion work (we hadn’t even noticed).

Reading through the wall panels, it becomes obvious that hidden behind the apparently blank facade is a hotel with some of the most innovative, environmentally friendly construction and sustainability thinking around.

For example, the facade’s integrated solar Photovoltaics (PV) panels and TripleLynx inverters not only cut energy consumption by half compared to conventional hotels, they also make the Crowne Plaza hotel the first energy efficient hotel in Denmark and one of the first of its kind in the World.

Solar panels and groundwater-based cooling and heating systems help the 366-room, 26-floors Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers conserve precious resources.

Our inviting deluxe room comes equipped with Paustian designer furniture made from recycled material, CO2-neutral air conditioning, low-energy light sources, and the LED flat screen, a mini bar, safe, ironing facilities and Wi-Fi. You’ll also find complimentary bottles of water, coffee, tea and biscuits, as well as shampoo and soap in the bathroom.

The minibar is well equipped with both the usual alcoholics and some healthy non-alcoholic drinks. Bathroom accessories are all made to biodegradable, organic standards. Complimentary bottles of water, coffee, tea and biscuits, as well as environmentally friendly shampoo and soap in the bathroom.

Not just eco-smart, but a hotel that cares about people

Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers is particularly committed to giving long-term unemployed a second chance by offering training with full employment option. The impressive result are some of the most friendly, reliable, loyal and international staff anywhere in the hospitality industry, Mireille tells us.

Moreover, hotel employees, just like guests, are also encouraged to use public transport, which is not too much of a hassle with the Ørestad station only 200 meters away.
