Eco friendly Old Leura Dairy accommodation in the Blue Mountains

Once upon a time there was a run down shack in the town of Leura, over the hills from Sydney and right in the Blue Mountains, that nobody loved. What was to become of this poor old shack? Well, it became Old Leura Dairy, a quirky, eco-friendly and very inviting luxury retreat, where comfort exists in harmony with “environmentally friendly.”

Curious about Old Leura Dairy, which had been recommended to us by the regional tourism board as exemplary in sustainable tourism practices, we jumped on a train from Sydney and, a short walk from the Leura station, met Linda, Old Leura Dairy’s office manager, who showed us around the property and into Moo Manor (no kidding), our luxury accommodation for the night. What a pleasure.

A night at Moo Manor, Old Leura Dairy

Moo Manor, one out of a range of accommodation options at Old Leura Dairy, features two bedrooms with king beds (or 2 single beds) and 2 ½ bathrooms, and a large, sunny open plan living area, providing all the comforts of home.

The slow combustion fire is a fantastic alternative to the TV, DVD, and video player that are there for your enjoyment (we couldn’t resist and made use of both the fire and the large screen TV for the latest James Bond film that we picked from Moo Manor’s own collection of movies).

A CD player allows for mood (moo-ed!) music to help create your special occasion and lasting memories. It was raining when we stayed, which gave the whole place a magically peaceful, mystical atmosphere, just perfect to let your spirits flow while sitting in the open air hot water tub, and to watch and listen to the abundant forest life.

Among the very many sustainability initiatives at Old Leura Dairy, particular attention is paid to insulation, solar passive design principles and orientation allow for natural heating and cooling as well as creating a light filled space. The cottages are designed around people’s needs of warmth and welcome. Especially on a rainy or cloudy day, the hot water outdoor pool is not to be missed. Ask the staff for the key to open the cover. Pictures courtesy of Old Leura Dairy. Our thanks to Old Leura Dairy for having us stay!

About Leura and the Blue Mountains National Park

Leura is a very pretty town with a main street perfect for strolling and browsing. By day enjoy the many cafés, interesting shops and galleries. At night, feel the romance as the street twinkles with fairy lights. Take in sweeping views from the Sublime Point Lookout at the end of Sublime Point Road. Other lookouts are at the Gordon Falls Reserve in Olympian Parade and the Leura Cascades off Cliff Drive.

The Blue Mountains National Park is situated on 245,929 hectares and is located approximately 100 kilometres west of Sydney. From lookouts on the edges of the Blue Mountains National Park, cliffs fall away towards blue ridges broken by waterfalls that plunge into bowls of gum trees or narrow ravines. It’s those forests, more than anything else, which make the area so special.
