Travel Like a Pro: City Travel Tips by Marcello Arrambide, Wandering Trader

Marcello Arrambide

City travelers, here’s our latest interview with world’s most inspiring travel bloggers, sharing their favorite city destination and travel experiences. Today, meet Marcello Arrambide of travel blog Wandering Trader.

Marcello started his blog in 2010 originally to support a day trading company that he was involved with. The idea was to show people the ability to day trade and travel around the world. It turned into his own personal travel blog that chronicled his travels around the world. Marcello has been traveling for the last 6 years, during which he has visited over 80 countries on all 7 continents, lived in 12 countries spanning 5 continents, and also visited hundreds of cities. He now lives semi permanently in Medellin, Colombia.

Marcello, your best city trip so far?

I love Rio de Janeiro for its amazing people and atmosphere. Medellin for being one of the best places in the world to visit and live year round. And Addis Ababa in Ethiopia for its exotic and historical art, music, and literature, and food.

Your tips for city travelers heading the same way?

In Rio de Janeiro I would recommend to see all of the tourist traps that are seen online; the Christ Statue, famous steps, the beach, and try some of the fantastic deserts.

In Medellin there are little things to see and more things to experience. One can see the Botero Plaza and take trips along the famous mountains of the city. But the most important thing to see and experience in Medellin is the people.

In Ethiopia, one can get a taste of where the new and old world comes together. There isn’t so much to see in the city, but there are things to try like food, nightlife, etc.

As a professional travel blogger, what makes a city worth visiting?

I look mainly at the things to do and also what there is to experience. I think every city in the world has a little something to offer to visitors.

Your five ingredients for the perfect city trip?

  1. A reason to visit
  2. Get out and meet people
  3. Stay away from tourists and experience the local culture
  4. Eat at small local restaurants instead of big chains
  5. Learn the local language

Which apps are essential companions for a modern city traveler?

Google Maps. Easy Taxi/Uber. Whatsapp

Would you describe yourself as a responsible traveler?

Yes I would because I always try to give back and remain conscious to respect local culture.

Your key insight from traveling, so far?

If you are considering traveling around the world, I would highly recommend it. You will learn more from traveling around the world than from anything else you do in your life!

Thanks, Marcello – and safe travels!
