Barcelona and sustainability

One of the most popular city travel destinations in Europe, sustainability is a key concern of the Barcelona city government and the city’s tourism organizations. For example, in 2011 Barcelona became the first city in the world to be awarded the Biosphere certification by the Institute of Responsible Tourism. The award recognizes the city’s commitment to developing responsible tourism.

Barcelona also has a website (barcelona-access.cat) dedicated to accessible tourism, helping people with visual, hearing, motoric or cognitive disabilities find adequate accommodation, transport and sightseeing options.

Best time to visit Barcelona: how to avoid overcrowding

We love Barcelona in Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October). People are working, so it means you experience the city more like a local. Plus the weather tends to be good.

Avoid visiting Barcelona in August, it’s high season, everything is more expensive than usual, full of tourists everywhere and weather is too warm. The center of Barcelona suffers from overcrowding (overtourism), which might impact your travel experience.

Especially during July and August you might want to go and explore some of the lesser known city neighborhoods instead. And if you have time, explore nearby cities like Girona, which is only 1h20 by train.
